Das Gewissen ist frei,
es läßt sich nicht lenken.
Es ist stets dabei,
von Herzen zu denken.
Es möchte verstehen
und gar nichts verdrehen;
gehorchen will es nicht -
es stellt Liebe über Pflicht.
Das Gewissen ist frei,
nur frei kann es reifen.
Kann fertig nicht sein,
sonst würd`es versteifen.
Es würde dogmatisch
und bald leicht apathisch
wie Kirche und Partei -
und dann wär`es nicht mehr frei.
Das Gewissen ist frei,
auf allen Gebieten.
Nur mutig muß es sein,
Paroli zu bieten:
den Dummen und Bösen
die stets mit Getöse
sich klammern am Gesetz,
das dem Haben Vorrang läßt.
Das Gewissen ist frei,
doch nichts für Bequemen
weiß keine Sicherheit
in Anspruch zu nehmen.
Es spielt nicht „Verstecken“,
„Durch Sachzwang verdecken“
schenkt immer klaren Wein;
tauscht das Haben gegen Sein.
Das Gewissen ist frei,
auch das von dem Gegner.
Es läßt sich darauf ein,
Dissens zu durchleben
statt Mauern zu bauen,
und Gegner zu hauen;
die Liebe stets dabei -
das Gewissen ist frei!
Conscience is free
Conscience is free,
it cannot be controlled.
It is always
thinking with the heart.
It wants to understand
and not to twist things;
it does not want to obey -
it puts love above duty.
Conscience is free,
only free can it mature;
can never be done
or else it would petrify.
It would become dogmatic
and soon slightly apathetic
like church and party
and then it would no longer be free.
Conscience is free
in all respects.
It only has to be courageous
to stand up to
the foolish and the evil,
who always with a lot of noise
cling to the law,
which gives precedence to “having”.
Conscience is free,
but nothing for the comfortable;
knows no security
to which it has a claim.
It does not play “hide and seek”
„cover up with constraints“,
always tells the truth;
prefers “being” over “having”.
Conscience is free,
and so is the adversary's.
It accepts
to live through disagreement
instead of building walls
and beating adversaries;
love is always there -
conscience is free!
